Email and Account Settings

Check your mail settings to see if you already have your Exchange server running with IMAP.
If so, disable the account in Mail Settings.

Set up a new mail account by selecting Microsoft Exchange.

Enter your email address
(e.g. “dianeg@hp.com”) in the Email box.

Enter your Exchange domain and username
(e.g. “Americas\bennmike”) in the Username box. The text will shrink to fit.

Enter your password in the Password box.

The iPhone will now try to automatically discover your Exchange server.
If you don’t have Exchange 2007 with Autodiscovery turned on, it will fail and warn you that it couldn’t validate your account. You will have to manually enter your server name in the window. Make sure you enter your ActiveSync server name, not the OWA server (as in Entourage) or the real Exchange server (as in Outlook). If you are having trouble with this, check the tips section.

Tap the home button and go into Mail.
You should see your new account appear, and it should show your folders and email messages within a few moments. Congratulations, your Email is now set up!

Calendar

Once you’re sure email is working, go back into the Exchange Account Settings tab and tap Contacts to “ON”.
However, you can’t sync Contacts and Calendars from both Exchange and iTunes. You must choose one or the other as the iPhone will delete your old entries when you enable this.

Tap “Sync” when the iPhone warns you about deleting your existing entries.
Make sure that you’re ok with this before tapping “Sync.”

Wait a little bit after the iPhone enables Sync.
Do not expect to see everything there immediately. It may take about 5 minutes until everything is fully integrated.

Repeat these steps for your Calendar and you’re all set.

Tips

If your iPhone cannot connect to ActiveSync automatically, check for the following with your company’s system administrators:

Are you using exchange 2003?

Is Autodiscovery turned off?

Most Exchange implementations have a variety of different servers these days, each with a unique hostname and IP address. The one you want is the ActiveSync server, sometimes called “oma.yourcompany.com” since it’s mainly used for Outlook Mobile on Windows Mobile devices. If your company’s tech support doesn’t know much about the iPhone, change your tactics. Ask them which host name they enter when configuring Windows Mobile smartphones and PDA’s. These servers are very common and will be is the server you need with the iPhone.

Warnings

Installing Windows 7

Put the DVD in to the drive and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the drive.

Start of the Installation.

Start of the Windows Installation Process.

Select the Language, Formats and Keyboard Input.

Click the Install Now button, so far pretty easy.
Taking this from a person who has never done this before, there’s nothing really to worry about during this installation up to this point.
Let’s see if it holds true throughout the process.

You even have to acknowledge open source project licenses, so no surprise here.
Terms of course updated with each beta release, as they will be updated for the final release as well.
Ever wonder how many people Microsoft has working on this?

Alright, first hurdle.
Since we booted from the DVD we have to do a Custom Advanced install.
The upgrade option is greyed out (it’s available if you start the setup from within your current version of Windows)

So this is what you get after you click Custom on the previous screen.
I suppose this could be a little confusing for the non geek installer, especially if there is a list of multiple partitions.
Though by now I’m sure a lot of casual users have gotten somewhat of a grasp on what a hard drive is.
I hope so anyway.
I didn’t go to the Advanced tab to do any partitioning or formatting, as I had one partition on this test I just clicked next.

Alright, let the installation begin!
Here setup copies archives over for extraction and installation on the hard drive.

The files copied over pretty fast, now on to the extraction process.
This didn’t take long at all, about 6 minutes.

OK, so files were extracted, now setup needs a restart to continue.
No big deal, this part of the process went by quickly.
Cue the boot images from the start of this blog.

OK, so here we are, after the reboot and right back at it.
Windows 7 starts services to continue installation.

A quick glance back over to Windows 7′s installation progress bar. I think really just to see the “Completing Installation” text. Cute.

Alright, if my new Windows 7 wants a restart before it shows me my desktop goodness, then a restart it gets! Cue the boot screen shots again…

Right to action! I love it, at this point I can almost feel Windows 7 running through all 4GB of RAM and both cores.
So here we go, lets pick a username! (and password if you want, Windows 7 is good like that)

A change from Vista, here on the Windows 7 installation it asks for the product after Windows is installed,
for both systems though you can hit next without putting in a product key, this will install Windows 7 in a 30 day trial mode.

It’s always good to set the clock! Windows 7 needs to know what time it is!
You can really leave this as anything, just set your time zone and date.
Once Windows 7 loads you can click on the clock and update from the Internet.
Though I’m sure most people have previously set the time on their PCs, so Windows 7 should have that here already – just might need to change the timezone.

Picking the network location. Just as in Windows Vista, Windows 7 wants to know where you are,
this determines how the OS will set file sharing and network discovery settings.

And here Windows 7 sets those settings for file sharing and network discovery.
If you can remember the misery of setting up a network adapter in Windows 3.x or Windows 95, you might get a feeling of satisfaction at this screen. I know I did.

Cool new feature for a Home group.
This feels like setting up a Media Extender.
I like the idea, even more security for your networked files, and with an 1-2-3 setup like just entering a network code in to Windows 7 to automatically join together it’s even easier than setting up Windows shares and editing network properties, like a workgroup.

At this point – I can taste it! It just feels like it’s almost done and I can’t wait. Windows 7 here we come!

Yes, Windows 7 welcomes me! I can feel it, I’m only seconds away from my full glory of Windows 7 beta 1 installed and running!

Nice, Thanks Windows 7 – I always like having a nice prepared desktop!
(Curious though, as after Vista they did away with all the desktop icons – though most OEMs put them back.
Really folks, try to get rid of the icons, you’re using your desktop and don’t need to minimize a window to get to
something you access from the start menu – think intuitively)

And I’m in! Windows 7 sets up a few things super fast and…

My Windows 7 beta 1 desktop is here! Ready to go! Overall a pretty easy installation really.

How to add user accounts

To set up user accounts

Log on to your computer as an administrator. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Under Pick a category, click User Accounts.

Under Pick a task, click Create a new account.

In the User Accounts wizard, on the Name the new account page, type the name for the user. You can use the person’s full name, first name, or a nickname. Then click Next.

The User Accounts wizard displays the Pick an account type page. Click Limited, and then click Create Account.

To create another account, return to step 3.

Note: In these steps, you created a limited account. Limited accounts offer better security than Computer administrator accounts. However, limited accounts cannot make system-wide changes or install some applications. If you need to make changes to your system, log on with the administrator account you used to create the new accounts.

Configure your computer to share files

To share a folder on your computer so that files stored in the folder can be accessed from other computers on your home network

Log on to your computer as an administrator. For more information, see Access the administrator account from the Welcome screen.

Click Start, and then click My Documents.

Right-click the folder that you want to share, and then click Sharing and Security.

Tip: If you want to share your entire My Documents folder, open My Documents, and then click the Up button on the toolbar. You can then select the My Documents folder.

If you see a message that reads, As a security measure, Windows has disabled remote access to this computer, click the Network Setup Wizard link. Then follow the instructions in How to set up your computer for home networking. On the File and printer sharing page of the Network Setup Wizard, be sure to select Turn on file and printer sharing. If you do not see this message, skip this step and go to step 5.

Note: If you do not see the Network Setup Wizard link or the Share this folder on the network check box, your computer probably has Simple File Sharing disabled. This is a common change made to computers used for business. In fact, it happens automatically when a computer joins an Active Directory domain. You should follow these instructions to share a folder instead.

In the Properties dialog box, select the Share this folder on the network check box.

If you want to be able to edit your files from any computer on your network (instead of just being able to open them without saving any changes), select the Allow network users to change my files check box.

Click OK.

Windows Explorer will show a hand holding the folder icon, indicating that the folder is now shared.

Appended are details on how to circumvent the error’s displayed on a Generic Media Drive;

First option:

The safest method in working around this issue is to shut down the computer before removing or disconnecting the Media Drive. Doing so ensures there is no activity or interaction occurring with the Media Drive and removes the necessity of disabling any features within the antivirus software.

Second option:

Disable the file system real time protection on the Media Drive. Disabling this feature and restarting the system will normally allow the Safely Remove Hardware wizard to work appropriately. However, if this option is chosen, periodic manual scans of the Media Drive should be done to ensure no viruses have found their way to the drive.

An example of how to disable the real time scanning of the Media Drive within Symantec Antivirus v 8.x protection is described below:

Start Symantec (Norton) antivirus .

Click Configure and select the File System Realtime Protection option.

Click the Exclusions button.

Click the Files/Folders button.

Select the Media Drive by placing a check in the box next to the drive. Click OK to save the change.

Click OK on the Exclusions screen.

Click OK on the Realtime Protection screen to exit from the Symantec interface.

Although no message is given to do so, the computer must be shut down and restarted for the change to engage and correct the issue.

Again, performing a periodic manual scan of the Media Drive will have to be done.

To configure Internet Explorer to use a proxy over a LAN connection, use the procedure in the appropriate section.

Internet Explorer 6.0

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.

Under Proxy server, click to select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.

In the Address box, type the IP address of the proxy server.

In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the proxy server for client connections (by default, 8080).

You can click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box if you do not want the proxy server computer to be used when you connect to a computer on the local network (this may speed up performance).

Click OK to close the LAN Settings dialog box.

Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.

Internet Explorer 5

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.

Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click to select the Use Proxy Server check box.

In the Address box, type the appropriate proxy server information, and use the following format:

http://<address>

Click Advanced, and then type the appropriate proxy settings in the Servers area. Use the following syntax for the proxy settings:

http://<address>:<port>

where <address> is the Web address of the proxy server, and <port> is the port number that is assigned to the proxy server. For example, if the proxy server’s address is “proxy.example.microsoft.com” and the port number is 80, the setting in the Proxy Server box should appear like this:

http://proxy.example.microsoft.com:80

Important: If you use a backslash (\) instead of a slash (/) in the proxy server’s address, the settings disappear from the Proxy Server box and Internet Explorer does not find the proxy server.

Solutions

If you ever encounter this error then this means you must check your email before trying to send mail meaning that our mail server requires authentication, which can be achieved using one of these methods:

Pop before SMTP – check your email for new mail before trying to send email. This adds your IP address to a relayhosts file and allows any email to be sent from that IP address for up to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes you have to authenticate again.

Configure your email client to authenticate automatically by checking the “my server requires authentication” box in your email configuration. You will be able to send mail without having to “pop” your mail box first. If using MS Outlook, please try the following:

Open outlook

Go to Tools/Email Accounts

Select the Account with the trouble and click Change

Click on More Settings

Click on Outgoing Server Tab

Click “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) requires authentication” and make sure “Use same settings as incoming mail server” is selected (see attached image)

Click on “Advanced Tab”

Set outgoing Port (SMTP) to 26 (if your hosting account is Linux) or 587 if your hosting account is Windows.

Click Ok and then Test Account Settings

If it fails on send then proceed as instructed from 11-13.

Click on Advanced Tab

Set outgoing Port (SMTP) to 465

Check the box Beside “The server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)”.

Click ok and then Test Account Settings

One of our readers pointed out that it may help to remove apostrophes from your email account names.

Finally, if using a mail screening utility such as Mail Washer, you may want to disable the “automatically check at intervals” setting and check mail manually. If the system checks mail while you are sending you may get this error.

If none of the above work we recommend contacting your hosting provider.

Open up the document you would like to edit. If you wish, you may want to save a copy of the document. To do this, click on the Microsoft icon at the left-hand corner of Microsoft Word. On the drop-down menu, click on save as. It is better to save the document as a Word 97-2003 document, as Word 2007 is not compatible with older versions.

When you have opened and saved a copy of your document, on the top menu, click on “Review”. Select “Track Changes”. You are now ready to edit.

To add a comment to a word or paragraph, place your cursor at the end of the word or paragraph and then click on “Comment” in the review tab. This will open up a red box in which you can insert your comment.

To add in a missing word, just simply type in your text. Word will use red text with underlining, which cannot be changed at this point.

When words are deleted, the word will be struck through and in red font. When words or paragraphs are moved around, a red strike will also be used on that word or paragraph’s original place and it will appear in its new position in red font.

If you are the receiver of a document which has been edited using track changes, you must accept or reject the changes. To do this you can either right click on all changes (including comments) and choose the action steps (accept or reject changes). Alternatively, there is a choice on the top-bar menu to accept or reject each change one by one, or to accept or reject all changes in one move!

When you have finished, ensured that the document is set to final markup. This is done in the Review tab, next to the button for Track Changes. From the drop-down menu, select “Final”. This will retain any changes you selected but will return all font to its original formatting, which means you will not see any strikes, red fonts or comment boxes.

The comment tool in Word 2007 is a great way to proof-read a report or thesis paper and make notes to yourself instead of writing them onto a sheet of paper.

Open your Word Document. On the Ribbon click the Review tab, and click on the New Comment Icon.

Highlight the area where you want to create a note and Word adds a balloon linking to that text where you can add your notes.

After organizing my thoughts on this rough draft I choose the “Show all Revisions Inline” option.

This makes it easier to maintain the clean interface on the document. Just hover your mouse over the noted text to see the comment.

If you have entered an incorrect email address or password 10 consecutive times, your password may be locked for security purposes. To unlock your password, you need to confirm your identity. Once you successfully confirmed your identity, you will be asked to choose a new password. It is critical to choose a password that you can remember but that is also unique enough that no one else can guess it. If you forgot your password, you can create a new password. Here’s how:

Go to the PayPal website.

Click the Home tab at the top of the page.

Click password under the Log In button.

Enter your PayPal email address.

Enter the security code by typing the letters and numbers shown, without spaces.

Click Continue.

Follow the steps provided.

Find this line in the document that was just opened, it will read like this:

Replace the 0 with the number on the startup list corresponding to the option you want, counting from 0. For example, if you have a list like this one and want to change to Windows XP Home:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-27-amd64-generic
...
title Ubuntu, memtest86+
...
title Other operating systems:
...
title Microsoft Windows XP Home

…

you would change the number to 3. It is important to note that each lines such as “Other Operating Systems” should be counted as well.

Alternatively you can replace the number with the word ‘saved’ which will make the default whichever entry was last used. Each entry that should be remembered must have the ‘savedefault’ keyword, this is the case for the normal Ubuntu entries, but not the recovery alternatives. WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to ‘saved’ or your array will desync and will not let you boot your system.

Save the edited file

BACKING UP

The following procedure is valid only for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.

You can determine which version you are using by opening Outlook and clicking on Help > About Microsoft Outlook.

The Personal Folder file (.pst / PST) is the place where Outlook stores its data (when you’re using Outlook without Microsoft® Exchange Server).

Each Personal Folder file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You may have a single .pst file (usually called “Internet Folders” or “Personal Folders” in your Folder List), and you may also have an additional .pst file that you use to archive messages (named “Archive Folders”).

By backing up these PST files you will be backing up all your Outlook information.

In previous versions of Outlook, it was difficult to locate the folder containing the personal folder files. Developers have made this task much easier in Outlook 2007.

There are three ways to access the location of your data files.

In the Microsoft Outlook 2007 Main Menu, you can either click File > Data File Management

Or In the Microsoft Outlook 2007 Main Menu, click Tools > Account Settings

Or if you’re unable to access Microsoft Outlook, simply click Start (from the windows taskbar) > Control Panel (please choose classic view if you’re using Microsoft Vista to be able to see all options availoable) > Mail

If not already selected, click on the “Data Files” tab.

You may have a single data file or multiple data files.

These “Data Files” are where you store your email messages, calendar, tasks and other items.

Highlight the data file that you are interested in backing up and click on the “Open Folder…” icon.

Clicking on this icon will automatically launch Windows Explorer and take you to the location where this data file is stored.

Within the folder you should find an outlook.pst file .

Burn or copy this file to a CD, DVD, Thumb-drive or other backup source.

If you archive your email, be sure to backup the archive.pst file as well.

Prior to backing up these files, Outlook will need to be closed.

Additional Note

The table below lists key Outlook files that you may want to back up in addition to your Personal Folder(s). You will need to completely exit Outlook prior to copying these files. Depending upon your configuration some or all of these files may be present in your Outlook directory.

Type of File (Name or Extension)
Personal Folders (.pst files)
Outlook Bar shortcuts (.fav files)
Rules Wizard rules (.rwz files)
RSS subscription names (.sharing.xml.obi files)
Known feed list for RSS (.xml.kfl files)
Nicknames (.nick files)
Customized toolbar settings (outcmd.dat)
Customized system folder views (Views.dat
Macros and VBA programs VbaProject.otm
Signatures (.rtf, .htm, and .txt files)
Stationary (.htm files)
Templates (.oft files)
Dictionary (.dic files)
Stores a reference to which extensions (addins) you have loaded. (extend.dat files)

Compatibility Note
Microsoft introduced a new .pst format with the release of Office 2003 which has a greater storage capacity and supports multilingual Unicode (Unicode: A character encoding standard that enables multiple languages to be represented by using a single character set.).

Personal folder files (.pst) created using Office 2003 or 2007 will not be able to be opened by earlier versions of Office. To create a data file that is compatible with Outlook 2002 and earlier, you must first create a new data file in the Outlook 97-2002 format using the “Add” icon in the Data Files dialog box. Then you must select File > Import and Export from the main menu and import your email from the 2003/2007 .pst data file to the new 97-2002 data file that you just created. Visit this link for more information.

RESTORE

There are two methods that can be used to restore the Backup that has been created. The first is a known and proper method (normally used when re-installing your OS with a fresh install of Microsoft XP/Vista) and the second is a quick and dirty method should you need to recover files/folders that have been accidentally deleted.

Method 1

You can use the backup copy of your .pst file to restore your Outlook data if the original .pst file is damaged or lost. Everything that is saved in the .pst file is returned to Outlook.

Follow these steps to restore, or import, your data into Outlook:

If the .pst file that you want to import is stored on a removable device, such as a floppy disk, a portable hard disk drive, a CD-ROM, a magnetic tape cassette, or any other storage medium, insert or connect the storage device, and then copy the .pst file to the hard disk drive of the computer. When you copy the .pst file, make sure that the Read-Only attribute is not selected. If this attribute is selected, you might receive the following error message:The specified device, file, or path could not be accessed. It may have been deleted, it may be in use, you may be experiencing network problems, or you may not have sufficient permission to access it. Close any application using this file and try again. If you receive this error message, clear the Read-Only attribute, and then copy the file again.

Open Outlook.

On the File menu, click Import And Export. If the command is not available, rest the pointer over the chevrons at the bottom of the menu, and then click Import and Export.

Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.

Click Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next.

Type the path and the name of the .pst file that you want to import, and then click Next.

Select the folder that you want to import. To import everything in the .pst file, select the top of the hierarchy.

Click Finish.

Method 2

If you have followed the steps above to backup your Outlook data, restoring is simple.

All you do is copy the backup PST file(s) into the folder that you located when you initially backed up your work.

These are the steps you will need to take to Upgrade to the Latest IE Version (IE 8 Beta 2).

You’d probably want to print this, as the software will need your PC to restart/reboot.

IE Upgrade Steps

1. The Current Version of Internet Explorer (IE) is IE8 Beta 2

2. You can download the new IE by going to this website,

a. Download from the link below,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=33FB40FD-2EE2-476A-A152-ED03734691B3&displaylang=en

b. It’s a pretty large file, 15.8mb in total.

c. Save the file to your Desktop.

3. Once you’ve completed the download, launch the file, by double ‘left’ clicking on the file (currently on your desktop).

4. The relevant files will then be extracted to your Computer.

5. You will then be welcomed by a “Welcome to IE 8” Screen and they’ll ask if you wish to participate.

a. If you’re in a rush, I would suggest to click “I do not want to participate right now” and click next.

6. On the next screen, ‘left’ click “I Accept”.

7. Next, you will be brought to a screen that will ask whether you’d like to install updates,

a. Make sure the “Install Updates” is checked.

b. ‘Left’ Click Next.

8. The Installation will than start, by removing and previous IE Installations (If there are any IE Installations to be found).

9. You will than see a “Internet Explorer has been uninstalled” Screen.

a. Save all your current work.

b. Then goto the screen and ‘left’ click “Restart now (recommended)”.

c. Your PC will than restart.

10. Upon restart you will then be prompted by a security warning, asking if you should open the file.

a. ‘Left’ click “Run”.

11. Now the installation will commence, this will take approximately 10 minutes to finish.

12. Upon completion you PC will that restart once more, and the installation would be finished.

13. Once your PC has restarted, open up Internet Explorer.

14. A Set-Up screen will then be shown.

a. If you’re in a hurry, left click on the “Ask Me Again” button.

b. If not click on the “Use Express Settings” and click “Finish”.

c. The browser will than prompt you if you’d like to import any of your Bookmarks, select the browsers and click next.

15. And you’re Done !
