On Saturday February 20th we will be upgrading the Neptune server to the latest version of cPanel 11.25. We anticipate this upgrade taking no longer than an hour however with us doing many machines we cannot give a concrete time when each server will be done.

We do not anticipate any service interruptions during this time. cPanel may be slower than usual when the upgrading is being performed though. cPanel 11.25 brings many great new features and has reached stable and has been tested by us in a production environment on a limited number of servers.

If you have any questions about this maintenance window do not hesitate to contact us.

Neptune : Scheduled Maintenance (16/02/2010)

Start time: 01:00 AM PST
End time: 07:00 AM PST
Duration: 6 hours
Service Affected: Public Network, Private Network
Reason: Device Migration
Device: ts01.sr01.sea01, ts01.eq01.sea01
Location: sea01

==================================================

Datacenter Engineers will be conducting maintenance on the transport gear that provides connectivity from the Seattle, WA server facility to the Seattle, WA Westin Building facility. During this maintenance window, traffic on the following providers will be gracefully shifted off to other providers followed by BGP sessions being shut down:

10G Level 3 Transit
10G Global Crossing Transit
10G NTT/Verio Transit

1G Google Peering
10G Comcast Peering
10G SIX Peering Fabric
10G Time Warner Peering
10G Internal Public/Private Peering to WDC01
10G Internal Public/Private Peering to DAL01

After these sessions have been shutdown, Datacenter Engineers will migrate the transport network to new equipment. During this maintenance window, customer traffic destined for either DAL01 or WDC01 will be rerouted either over the public internet or through other paths for private network connectivity. Datacenter Engineers expect no impact to customers as traffic will be shifted prior to the event. Customers may notice some routing anomalies during the process as routes re-converge initially.

Once completed and circuits verified, BGP sessions will be restored and service will return to normal.

Again, Datacenter Engineers expect no impact to customer services once traffic has been shifted during this maintenance window.

Neptune : Emergency Network Maintenance (11/30/2009)

There will be emergency network maintenance on FCR01 which our Neptune server is on. This window is on Monday November 30th starting at 1:00am EST and lasting until 2:00am EST. Although the window is for 1 hour we estimate that there will only be a down time of 15-20 minutes. This maintenance is necessary to correct an issue that could cause network interruptions that would not be scheduled.

Details

The following details were provided by SoftLayer,

The following notification is to inform you of an EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE event on the SoftLayer Technologies IP Network. Due to the severity, the time frame between this notice and the maintenance window has been shortened.

Start Time: 01:00 EST (06:00 UTC)
End Time: 02:00 EST (07:00 UTC)

Summary:
SoftLayer Technologies in conjunction with Cisco Systems have identified a service impacting bug in the current IOS version running on this router. A vendor recommended upgrade has been provided as a resolution and needs to be implemented immediately.

Original Issue Reference:
With the introduction of 4-byte ASNs (Autonomous System Numbers), a newly devised method of injecting a specifically crafted prefix into the global route table allows for the BGP process to be reset on older IOS code.

https://forums.softlayer.com/showthread.php?t=4585

Customer Impact:
During this maintenance, customers will notice a complete loss of connectivity to their servers on the frontend network (public network). Backend network (private network) connectivity will NOT be impacted during this maintenance. While the upgrade duration is scheduled for 1 hour, we only expect between 15-20 minutes of downtime as the routers reload and fully converge. Again, this will NOT impact the backend network (private network) for customer servers.

Neptune : Server Upgrade (27/11/2009 – 01/12/2009)

We will be migrating the accounts on the Neptune server starting on Friday November 27th and this will last until Tuesday December 1st. The reason for this upgrade is our continued commitment to having exceptional quality of service.

For the migration process we will be moving accounts in sections based on IP address. We anticipate no more than 5 minutes of down time per account in order to make the switch. We migrate the account data then re-route the IP address to the new server. Thus there is no down time associated with the upgrade.

The specifications of the server will be a Dual Xeon 5520 with 12GB ram and four 300GB SAS drives in raid-10.

Current Neptune:
Xeon 5430
4GB RAM
4×250GB SATA II Raid-10

New Neptune:
Dual Xeon 5520
12GB RAM
4×300GB SAS Raid-10

You’ll notice three times as much memory and SAS drives which are significantly faster than the SATA counterparts. It’ll also have twice as many CPU’s and will be using the newer 5520 CPU.

If you have any concerns about this migration please do not hesitate to contact us.

Start Date: 11/27/2009
End Date: 12/01/2009
Estimated Down Time: less than 5 minutes
Duration: 4 days

Neptune : Network Server Kernel Upgrades (25/08/2009)

Date: 08/25/2009
Start time (EDT): 11:40pm
End time (EDT): 12:00am
Duration: 20 minutes
Estimated Down Time: 10 minutes

==================================================
We will be updating the Neptune server kernel to the latest version on Tuesday August 25th at 11:40pm EDT. We estimate this will result in about 10 minutes of down time while the server reboots.

Keeping kernels up to data is a necessary step in order to stay on top of performance improvements as well as have the latest security fixes. In this case there have been some security vulnerabilities which we have taken steps to mitigate but now with an official kernel released for CentOS we can run a version that is patched. We feel it’s best to have this done as soon as possible which is why there is only 24 hour notice.
